Car Shipping to Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh is one of the greatest cities on the east coast, in my book. If you’re fortunate enough to be moving to this great city, then you are going to be very happy with your relocation. Happy that is if you like the character and attractions that Pittsburgh has to offer. For those that are history buffs, you will feel right at home amidst the rich, colonial and civil war sites. The downtown projects a feeling of a metropolis redolent of gothic undertones, culture, red lights, diverse architecture, and ethnicity. Pittsburgh is home to many different ethnic groups including communities comprised by many jewish, polish, german, and Italian families.
Food is extremely diverse as well as the tourist attractions. Enjoy great museums, galleries, and parks scattered throughout the city. My favorite places were Squirrel Hill, Oakland, and Shadyside. You will be inspired by the sports enthusiasts here. There isn’t much choice about rooting for the Steelers, the fans are infectious and soon, you may find yourself carrying a terrible towel.

EPA and DOT Join Forces to Further Improve Auto Industry
With our country slowly recovering from its economic crisis, there is still much we need to work towards to make a full recovery. Likewise, the auto industry is also seeing some major re-structuring in recent months – past and future. Currently experiencing it’s deepest depression to date, the automotive industry has seen some crazy times over the course of recent times past. One program which helped to simultaneously stimulate both the automotive industry as well as our suffering economy was the CARS program. This program, also known as the Cash-for-Clunkers program, offered rebates up to $4500 on newer more fuel efficient vehicles when you traded in your older gas guzzlers. The program turned out to be a great success.
Recently, a new program has been brought to the table of consideration. This proposal can be seen as a sort of historic first for this country. It provides a sort of coordinated national vehicle fuel efficiency and emissions standards. Among other perks, the program supports decreasing oil consumption, reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases, and it would also help out the American consumer save money at the pump and other auto related expenses.
Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood expects the proposal to not only be implemented, but he expects it to be a great success. In one interview LaHood explains how the program could revolutionize the auto industry saying, “The increases in fuel economy and the reductions in greenhouse gases we are proposing today would bring about a new era in automotive history.†Secretary LaHood also praised the program and its incentives, saying, “These proposed standards would help consumers save money at the gas pump, help the environment, and decrease our dependence on oil – all while ensuring that consumers still have a full range of vehicle choices.â€
Looking at the wide range of areas affected by this proposal, it isn’t difficult to see exactly why the proposed program is receiving so much support so early. The program would ideally cover models produced during the time period 2012 through 2016. Being as how there is a collaboration of agencies involved in the structuring of this proposal, the rules automakers must abide by will be much more stone-cut – in comparison to the older three-tier standard (state standard, DOT standard, EPA standard).
EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson also supports the proposed program claiming that “By bringing together a broad coalition of stakeholders – including an unprecedented partnership with American automakers – we have crafted a path forward that is win-win for our health, our environment, and our economy. Through that partnership, we’ve taken the historic step of proposing the nation’s first ever greenhouse gas emissions standards for vehicles, and moved substantially closer to an efficient, clean energy future.†It would appear as if this country’s automotive industry is indeed restructuring to create a more Eco-friendly / consumer friendly face for itself. One can only assume that through this program numerous branches of the industry will be effected. Examples include auto shipping, automobile production, automotive sales, and other various areas.
So, after examining the “nation’s first proposed greenhouse gas emissions standards,†it has become clear that the program will assist consumers in saving approximately $3000 on automotive expenses (i.e. insurance, fuel, maintenance), conserve over one billion barrels of oil (producing less pollution annually), and also lowering overall fuel efficiency by an approximated 5% each year. Certainly, with a proposal receiving as much support as this one, future proposed programs should aim to enhance our country/economy/environment as well.
Cash For Clunkers: Flunking?
It started of as a way of encouraging people to invest in more Eco-friendly automotive options while also providing a way of stimulating an immensely struggling automotive industry. The CARS program, also referred to as the Car Allowance Rebate System, was originally funded with one billion dollars. To the surprise of both the automotive industry and the Government alike, these funds were exhausted inside of a month, three months earlier than anticipated. The answer to this problem took form in an additional $2 Billion, a total funding of approximately $3 Billion.
The idea was that if you traded in your old hunk-of-junk gas-guzzler, you would be rewarded by receiving up to $4500 towards a newer more fuel efficient vehicle. At face value it would seem that everyone is making out in this situation. However, recently there have been some less than thrilled auto dealership owners who have come forward to voice complaints. For starters, dealers are beginning to feel as if the Federal Government is unable to effectively run this program. Many dealerships are toying with the idea of discontinuing the program based on the notion that the Government is taking an abundance of time to reimburse dealers, as well as denying a large amount attempted transactions.
One organization known as the Greater New York Automobile Dealers Association – GNYADA, are making their voices heard. President Mark Schienberg begins by point out that since the commencement of the program, many of these dealers have paid out hundreds of thousands of dollars in rebates and “ only a very small percentage of that money has been paid back to the dealers, leaving these small business owners too cash strapped to continue offering consumers the discounts. Even in the best of times, carrying this much debt would cause problems, but in today’s credit-strained economy, it’s simply too much for the dealers to handle.” It’s not hard to see where the problems begin to form.
Though the Transportation Department refuses to release exactly what percentage of applicants are denied, one survey suggested that some dealers have said up to 80 % of their rebate applications ended in rejection, while other dealers are already approximately $200,000 in debt due to the program. The biggest concerns/problems being voiced are:
Many dealers feel that legit deals are getting rejected by the federal government for minute mistakes and/or typos – and there is no effort or guidance to assist in explaining how to correct these mistakes.
Program administrators are taking to long to provide a solid “yes†or “no†answer regarding qualifications.
Trying to get through the customer service phone lines can take several hours.
The computer system used by the Government is full of glitches, which prevent dealers for applying for the much needed rebates.
Also, with the boost in car sales, the car shipping industry is definitely seeing more business, yet another branch of the auto industry within reach of the program. Though most dealers do see the CARS program as something which has helped stimulate the automotive industry as well as encourage people to purchase more fuel efficient vehicles, changes must be made in order to keep them supportive and on-board.
