EPA and DOT Join Forces to Further Improve Auto Industry
With our country slowly recovering from its economic crisis, there is still much we need to work towards to make a full recovery. Likewise, the auto industry is also seeing some major re-structuring in recent months – past and future. Currently experiencing it’s deepest depression to date, the automotive industry has seen some crazy times over the course of recent times past. One program which helped to simultaneously stimulate both the automotive industry as well as our suffering economy was the CARS program. This program, also known as the Cash-for-Clunkers program, offered rebates up to $4500 on newer more fuel efficient vehicles when you traded in your older gas guzzlers. The program turned out to be a great success.
Recently, a new program has been brought to the table of consideration. This proposal can be seen as a sort of historic first for this country. It provides a sort of coordinated national vehicle fuel efficiency and emissions standards. Among other perks, the program supports decreasing oil consumption, reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases, and it would also help out the American consumer save money at the pump and other auto related expenses.
Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood expects the proposal to not only be implemented, but he expects it to be a great success. In one interview LaHood explains how the program could revolutionize the auto industry saying, “The increases in fuel economy and the reductions in greenhouse gases we are proposing today would bring about a new era in automotive history.” Secretary LaHood also praised the program and its incentives, saying, “These proposed standards would help consumers save money at the gas pump, help the environment, and decrease our dependence on oil – all while ensuring that consumers still have a full range of vehicle choices.”
Looking at the wide range of areas affected by this proposal, it isn’t difficult to see exactly why the proposed program is receiving so much support so early. The program would ideally cover models produced during the time period 2012 through 2016. Being as how there is a collaboration of agencies involved in the structuring of this proposal, the rules automakers must abide by will be much more stone-cut – in comparison to the older three-tier standard (state standard, DOT standard, EPA standard).
EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson also supports the proposed program claiming that “By bringing together a broad coalition of stakeholders – including an unprecedented partnership with American automakers – we have crafted a path forward that is win-win for our health, our environment, and our economy. Through that partnership, we’ve taken the historic step of proposing the nation’s first ever greenhouse gas emissions standards for vehicles, and moved substantially closer to an efficient, clean energy future.” It would appear as if this country’s automotive industry is indeed restructuring to create a more Eco-friendly / consumer friendly face for itself. One can only assume that through this program numerous branches of the industry will be effected. Examples include auto shipping, automobile production, automotive sales, and other various areas.
So, after examining the “nation’s first proposed greenhouse gas emissions standards,” it has become clear that the program will assist consumers in saving approximately $3000 on automotive expenses (i.e. insurance, fuel, maintenance), conserve over one billion barrels of oil (producing less pollution annually), and also lowering overall fuel efficiency by an approximated 5% each year. Certainly, with a proposal receiving as much support as this one, future proposed programs should aim to enhance our country/economy/environment as well.
