Salt Lake City is the capital and largest city in the US state of Utah; more often than not the city’s name is abbreviated to simply Salt Lake, or simply SLC if one is feeling particularly lazy. As of 2007 the city has a population of 180,000; the city, however, is a principal city in the Salt Lake City-Ogden-Clearfield Combined Statistical Area, with a total combined population of 1.6 million residents.

The city was founded as the Great Salt Lake City in 1847 by a group of Mormon pioneers led by Mormon prophet Brigham Young (whom Brigham Young University is named after). The Mormons irrigated much of the city, helping to make it fertile enough for plants to grow in, and to this day the city has been the headquarters for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (otherwise known as the Mormon Church). Mining booms brought many non-Mormons to the city in the late 19th and early 20th century, and the economy has become diverse, with many ties to banking and finance.

Because of its location on the steppes of Utah, the city is known for its hot, dry summers and cold winters. Average highs during the summer top out around 89 degrees, while overnight lows can drop to around 64 or so; during the winter months, however, the temperatures drop significantly, with average highs in the high 40′s and lows well below freezing.
