Richmond is a city in and the capital of the Commonwealth of Virginia; like all other incorporated cities, Richmond is an independent city, meaning it is not part of any county whatsoever. With a total population of just over 200,000, the city is the third largest city in the state of Virginia (after Norfolk and Virginia Beach).

The city was first founded in 1609 after settlers from Jamestown moved to the new city; however, the new settlement did not last long, and for the next one hundred years remained unsettled. In 1737 the new city of Richmond was founded and grew quickly, particularly during the Revolutionary War, where Patrick Henry gave his “give me liberty or give me death!” speech in 1775, as well as the writing of the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom (the basis for the separation of church and state). During the American Civil War the city was the focus of the Northern Army, and fell in 1865; it had housed the Confederate government during the war as well. Today, many monuments and landmarks dot the city from this era, as its history is a large part of its economy, bringing tourists from around the world to see the city.

Summers are typically hot and humid and the city, and winters are cooler; rarely does it snow, however. Average summer highs top out around 87 degrees, while overnight lows drop to around 70 or so; during the winter months, however, temperatures cool down considerably, with average highs around 55 degrees and lows hovering around the freezing point.
