Raleigh is the capital of the state of North Carolina and is also the county seat of Wake County. It is known as the “City of Oaks,” due to its abundance of oak trees, and is the second most populous city (with a population of just over 380,000) after Charlotte. It is a member of the Research Triangle, which is made up of the cities of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill, and is a member of the Raleigh-Durham-Cary Combined Metropolitan Statistical Area, which as a total population of 1.6 million residents.

The city was originally built to be the state capital of North Carolina and in 1792 was officially declared to be the county seat and the state capital. As the capital of the entire state of North Carolina, the city grew quickly during the 19th century, and after the Civil War ended many African-Americans moved to the city to take advantage of the great education programs that were finally available to them. The city, like many others, experienced urban decay during the 1970′s and 1980′s, though today the city is in the midst of a massive urban renewal project that has turned the dilapidated downtown area into a bustling place.

The city is located in the Southeastern U.S, and its weather is typical of other states in the region. Typical highs in the summer reach around 84 degrees, while lows drop down to around 65 degrees or so. During the winter, the highs peak around 48 degrees, and lows typically drop to below freezing, and snow and freezing rain are common in the winter months.
