Portland is a city in and is also the county seat of Multnomah County, Oregon. According to an official 2008 US Census estimate the population of the city was over 575,000 and it is currently the 23rd largest city in the United States. It was founded by William Overton in 1851 and was originally known as “The Clearing.” Overton saw great commercial promise in the area and by 1852 the population had risen to over 800. It was incorporated later that year and was actually a major port in the northwest, until Seattle’s Deepwater Harbor was connected via railroad to the rest of the United States.
