Omaha is the largest city in and the county seat of Douglas County, Nebraska; it is also the largest city in the state. As of the 2000 US Census the city’s population was over 432,000, though recent estimates state that the population has grown slightly since that time. It is a principal city in the Omaha-Council Bluffs Metropolitan Statistical Area, with over 1.2 million people, and ranks 60th on the list of largest Metropolitan areas in the United States.

The city was founded on industry; specifically, railroads. Immigrants worked their way west to the city looking for manufacturing jobs, and thanks to a large influx of residents to the city in a very short amount of time, living conditions were rough and violence ensued. During the 19th century the city was known for being ruthless, though this all changed in 1881 after the National Guard was sent to the city to quell the violence. During the Second World War the city was instrumental in building many of the planes that were used in bombing campaigns throughout Europe and Japan, and even today the city is known for its manufacturing, though the economy has shifted to a much more service-oriented model.

During the summer months the city’s temperatures hover around 84 degrees during the day and drop to around 60 degrees overnight. During the winter, however, temperatures drop significantly with average highs barely getting above freezing and lows well below, and are often dropping into single digits.
