Norfolk is an independent city inside the Commonwealth of Virginia, and with a population of 234,000 is the second-largest city in the state (behind Virginia Beach). The city has a history of being a strategic military transportation point, and the Norfolk Naval Base is the largest naval base in the area. Also, because of its many beaches and waterfronts, it is a great getaway for tourists and residents alike.

The city was first founded in 1619, though the name of it then isn’t exactly clear. Needless to say, after many reorganizations of the colony of Virginia the name and location was finally settled as Norfolk. It quickly grew into a naval and military powerhouse, a tradition that has been kept up today. Norfolk was also a stop on the Underground Railroad, due mainly to its anti-slavery tendencies; many freed and escaped slaves fled the city through its ports, and made their way to Canada.

Summers are typically hot and humid and the city, and winters are cooler; rarely does it snow, however. Average summer highs top out around 87 degrees, while overnight lows drop to around 70 or so; during the winter months, however, temperatures cool down considerably, with average highs around 55 degrees and lows hovering around the freezing point.
