Hartford is the capital and the second largest city in the US state of Connecticut. As of the 2000 US Census the city’s population was over 124,000 residents, and the Greater Hartford Metropolitan Area is the largest metro area in the state. It is the home of several major insurance companies and has recently overtaken New Orleans as the wealthiest city in the United States.

It was founded in 1635 and was originally called Newtown, but the name was quickly changed to Hartford in honor of the English village of Hertford. In 1814, delegates from the state of Connecticut met in Hartford to discuss possible secession from the US but quickly decided not to; ironically, the city was a hotbed of abolitionist activity during the Civil War. Today, however, the city is still in the midst of urban decline, with many residents moving away to the suburban areas and out of the downtown region, though it still maintains its beauty.

Its climate is typical of New England, with hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. During the summer temperatures top out at around 90 degrees with overnight lows dropping to around 60 degrees or so. During the winter months, however, normal highs stay right around the freezing mark, with lows dropping in to the teens overnight.
