Fort Hood is actually not a US City, but rather a United States Army fort that lies just outside of Killeen, Texas. It is a census-designated place in Bell County and it is located between Austin and Waco. The population of the fort, according to the official 2000 US Census was over 33,000 and it was named after Confederate General John Bell Hood.

It was originally a test ground to test new tank destroyers, which were developed to counter the German blitzkrieg. The US Army seized the land of over 300 families and in 1942 the fort officially opened. Over 50,000 troops were station at the fort when World War II ended and today the fort is often busy with national and international disaster relief and peacekeeping efforts.
