Detroit is the county seat of Wayne County, Michigan and is also the largest city in the state of Michigan. It is known as the automobile capital of the world as well as an important source of popular music, with Motown and The Motor City sounds being popular. As of a 2007 census estimate the city ranks 11th overall in terms of population in the United States, with a total population of just under one million residents.

The city was founded in the late 18th century and was actually the capital of Michigan from 1805-1847; during the War of 1812 it was captured and fell into British hands. It wasn’t fully incorporated as a city until 1915, and during the Great Depression was a port in the storm as well as a convenient place to smuggle liquor into from Canada. During the 50′s and 60′s the city experienced urban decay as residents fled to the suburbs, and the city was plagued with crime. Today, however, the city is rebounding via many urban renewal projects as well as businesses coming back that had left previously.

Detroit lies in a continental climate zone that is heavily influenced by the Great Lakes. Summers are warm, but not very hot, with average highs topping out in the mid-80′s; overnight lows drop to around 60, but rarely below. During the winter months the temperatures drop severely with highs just above freezing and lows well below the teens.
