Bellingham is a city in and the county seat of Whatcom County, Washington, and is the 12th largest city in the state with a population of over 75,000 residents. It is the principal city in the Bellingham Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes most of outlying Whatcom County, a relatively sparsely-populated county.

The city was founded in 1858 by a coal mining company, who set its sights on being the largest in the Pacific Northwest. They brought thousands of workers in and the city grew virtually overnight. Soon after, gold was found in the area, and even more prospectors came from California. The rush didn’t last long, however, and coal mining was its main economic sustenance up until the mid-20th century, where shipping is a major part of the economy now, as well as different service-based jobs.

The city is a typical city in Washington, characterized by cool summers and cold, snowy winters. Temperatures in the summer rarely get above 75 degrees, while overnight lows dip to around 55 or so. During the winter months, however, temperatures drop sharply to around 45 degrees, while lows hover around the freezing point.
