Baytown is a city located both in Chambers County and Harris County in the state of Texas. It’s located in the Gulf Coast region of the state and lies within the Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown Metropolitan Area, and as of the 2000 US Census had a population of over 66,000 residents, though recent census estimates put the city’s population at over 68,000.

The city actually started as three separate and distinct towns, dating as far back as 1822. All three grew rapidly, though it wasn’t until 1947 that the cities decided to merge and create one combined city; early in 1848 the city of Baytown was officially founded. The city is now known for its many oil refineries and Exxon-Mobil is still one of the leading employers in the city, with over ten oil plants in the area.

The city serves as a central city in the Greater Houston area, including eastern Harris County, western Chambers County and is a primary city in the Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown Metropolitan Area. It is a major shopping destination for neighboring residents, thanks mainly to the San Jacinto Mall.
