Batavia is a city entirely within the county of Genesee, in the state of New York. As of the 2000 US Census the city’s population was over 16,000, and the name derives from the Latin word for the Betuwe region of the Netherlands.

The city was founded in 1802 after negotiations with the local Native American tribes; it grew slowly at first, though by 1826 the Erie Canal had been built and the city began to grow rapidly, thanks mainly to Buffalo and Rochester growing quickly as well. It was incorporated in 1915 and, after the city’s growth slowed somewhat, the city stabilized and is known for its many dairy farms.

Because of its proximity to the city of Rochester, it shares much of the same climate that its larger neighbor does. During the summer highs reach around 80 degrees, with lows dropping into the low 60′s. During the winter months the city’s high temperatures hit around freezing, with lows often well below and into the low teens.
