Bangor is a city in and is currently the county seat of Penobscot County, Maine. According to official estimates taken by the US Census in 2007 the population of the city was over 31,000. It is the third largest city in Maine and is the lumber capital of the state, mainly due to its many forests and logging businesses.

Bangor was founded in 1769, and despite its founding time it remained relatively untouched during the American Revolution. It was known for its many lumber mills by the time of the 19th century and quickly turned into a major supplier of timber for New England at the time. It was also a hotbed for abolitionist activities before the American Civil War, and actually contributed some regiments to the war. Today it is known mainly for its tourism and as a great summer vacation area.
