Auburn is a city in and the county seat of Androscoggin County, Maine (which it shares with its twin city, Lewiston). It is one of the two principal cities in the Lewiston-Auburn Metropolitan New England City and Town Area as well as the Lewiston-Auburn Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2000 US Census the city’s population was over 23,000.

The city was first settled in 1786 and was then incorporated in 1802 as a town. It was named after a place featured in a poem by Oliver Goldsmith and as originally part of Cumberland County before it became the county seat of Androscoggin County in 1854. It was reincorporated as a city in 1868 and developed into a mill town during this time. Today the city’s economy is more service-based, following the same line as its neighbor, Lewiston.

The city is known for its cool summers and long snowy winters. During the summertime the high temperatures in the city typically peak around 80 degrees, with overnight lows dropping to around 60 degrees. During the winter, however, snow is common, with highs just above freezing and lows often in the teens.
